Celebrate Melbourne Cup In Brisbane

Every year, the Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday of November in Australia. It’s a horse race, but it’s so much more than that. The Melbourne Cup has become a national holiday for Australians and an event that stops the nation in its tracks.

The Melbourne Cup was first run in 1861, when it was known as “The Grand National Steeplechase.” The race was originally run over 1,200 meters (about 6 furlongs), but now it’s run over 3,200 meters (about 2 miles). It was moved to Flemington Racecourse in 1882 and is still held there today.

It’s been called “the race that stops the nation,” because of how many people watch or participate in it every year. In 2018 alone, 1 million people watched the event live on television and another 700,000 people watched it at home via streaming service Foxtel Now. That’s not even counting those who attended the event in person!
